Saroja

Saroja (Maria-Saroja Ponnambalam) is an interdisciplinary artist and geographer with Venezuelan and Tamil-South Indian roots based in Treaty 13 territory (Toronto/Tkaronto), who embraces DIY approaches to filmmaking, sound-art and music composition. Having specialized in documentary since 2007, she brings her love for cities, community-building and the environment to her practice. Her documentaries include The Consequence of Rain, Pandi, Pretty Little Bits, and Fotdella that have screened internationally and won multiple awards. Outside of her arts practice, she works as a community planner and engages in city-building through an intersectional and critical geography lens. She holds a B.F.A. in Film Production from York University and an M.A. in Human Geography from University of Toronto. She is also a recipient of the Ontario Art Council’s K.M Hunter Award for Excellence in Media Arts.
