Meet artists María Fernanda Camarena and Gabriel Rosas Alemán, who together form the Mexico City-based duo Celeste, for an afternoon of art activities! Inspired by their installation Casting a Net, Casting a Spell – a large-scale quilted canopy evocative of a suncatcher – come explore the power of the sun through family-friendly creative exercises.
Meet artists María Fernanda Camarena and Gabriel Rosas Alemán, who together form the Mexico City-based duo Celeste, for an afternoon of art activities!
Their project for The Bentway, Casting a Net, Casting a Spell, forms a giant, quilted canopy extending over a shipping container. Like a suncatcher, the piece both embraces the sun and captures it, weaving in the myths and stories that have surrounded the sun since ancient times.
In this workshop, you’ll sit in the shade of the canopy and go through a unique activity booklet inspired by Celeste’s installation. Colouring pages, creative prompts and mixed media explorations will spark curiosity as you celebrate the sun and shade together. Celeste asks:
We cast our net wide and caught the sun. What can we do with all that energy?
We cast our net as one casts a spell.
What happens under the net’s shade? What is activated by the sun’s energy? Right above us. Changing the color of the light, casting shades on the pavement

When you have the energy of the sun on your side, you have to use all that power for good.
A net that big is a collective effort. It’s not mine, not yours, it’s ours.

What you need to know:
- All experience levels are welcome– no arts and craft experience is necessary.
- Youth under age 16 must be accompanied by a caregiver.
- All materials will be provided.
