During a time marked by widespread challenges to public health and well-being, public spaces have served as essential sites for civic life; including recreation, cultural engagement, advocacy, activism and commerce. But the opportunities, recognition of expertise, and allocation of resources for city-building have long been exclusive or confined. How then can cities around the world take this moment to broaden the public space field to include, empower and value more perspectives in the development, operations and programming of our shared public realm?

The Bentway’s Public Space Fellowship seeks to help address these gaps and ensure that burgeoning talent, lived experience, and a diversity of expertise help shape a more inclusive and accessible city for all.

Fellows will engage directly with the focus of our upcoming Spring/Summer season, The Street: A Civic Stage, which examines the role of the streets as primary sites for social, political, and cultural innovation and improvisation. Fellows will conduct research and engage in professional development opportunities, shape and lead our Spring 2022 Street Summit, and inform The Bentway’s work on the future of the under-Gardiner corridor.

The Bentway is committed to creating more opportunities within the public space field for dynamic, intersectional voices that are frequently left out of civic dialogue and city-building. Acknowledging the limitations and shortcomings of existing processes, The Bentway seeks to provide a professional development opportunity that provides resources, support, and a platform for learning, generative exchange, and capacity-building.

The Bentway’s Public Space Fellowship will help support the next generation of diverse leaders who will steward the future of public space, ensuring resiliency and equitable access. Fellows will act across disciplines and engage in unique collaborations with urban space practitioners, creatives, and organizational partners to support new initiatives and ongoing research. They will also inform The Bentway’s growth plans, commitments, and actions to deliver on its mission and core values.
