Collaborating with the Land: The Material Practices of Leeroy New and Genesis Báez

Leading artists from The Bentway’s summer season Beyond Concrete discuss their approach to constructing speculative futures from the materials of past and present. Featuring Leeroy New and Genesis Báez; moderated by The Bentway’s Anna Gallagher-Ross. Presented in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and Design TO. 

WOODS

At The Bentway Skate Trail (250 Fort York Blvd)

A forest of upside-down human bodies grows out of the concrete, set against Toronto’s high-rise horizon. In WOODS, performers’ bodies struggle to maintain their verticality, calling attention to the struggle faced by nature itself: How long can the body resist? How long can our forests survive?

City Sketching Workshop with Julie Ourceau
2:15 – 3:15pm

At The Bentway Skate Trail (250 Fort York Blvd)

Join Landscape Architectural Designer and Artist, Julie Ourceau, to interact with the Gardiner through hands-on urban sketching activities. Explore creative ways to observe the built environment and connect with the urban landscape. All levels welcome; materials provided.

Beyond Concrete Curator’s Tour

At The Bentway Skate Trail (250 Fort York Blvd)

Take a tour of the Beyond Concrete season exhibition, guided by Bentway curators Anna Gallagher-Ross (Senior Manager, Programming) and Alex Rand (Manager, Programming). Explore this series of public artworks installed along The Bentway Skate Trail, featuring Leeroy New, Genesis Báez, Lisa Jackson, Alex Sherriff, and Public Visualization Lab/Studio. Come see how Beyond Concrete brings together artists, architects, and designers to explore the urban natural world framed by the Gardiner’s iconic concrete columns.

Interspecies City: Hearing and Seeing The City from a Non-Human Perspective

“Leading artists from the Bentway’s Spring/Summer season Beyond Concrete are joined by local practitioners to discuss their sound- and visual arts-based projects which explore the city from the perspective of non-humans. Featuring Alex sheriff, Nerea Feliz and Joyce Hwang (Double Happiness), and Tosca Terán. Moderated by Alex Bozikovic of the Globe and Mail.
