The Urban Land Institute (Toronto chapter) welcomes reps from The Bentway and NYC’s The High Line in conversation about the future of the Gardiner.
With the recent approval of The Bentway’s Under Gardiner Public Realm Plan, and the planned City→Province “upload” of the Expressway, it’s an exciting moment to write a new chapter for this old piece of infrastructure.
Phase 1 of The Bentway opened in 2018, demonstrating how the Gardiner Expressway can support civic life alongside mobility needs, and the imagination that Toronto is capable of. But that was just the beginning.
What can we learn from industrial reuse projects across the globe, including from the success of The High Line in New York City?
How can Toronto further seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity unlock new possibilities under the Gardiner – for our waterfront; for public space; for the environment?
